Jim Montgomery drops ‘Wordle’ clue when asked about Bruins’ Game 2 starter

Bruins Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman are still in the mix for a Game 2 start. John Tlumacki/Globe Staff. By Conor Ryan. April 22, 2024 | 1:46 PM. In what has become a recurring trend this postseason, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery did not divulge which of his goalies will start Game 2 against the Maple Leafs on Monday night.. But Boston’s bench boss did have some fun with the media after morning skate upon receiving the expected inquiry about the Bruins’ netminding duo of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark.. “It’s funny you ask,” Montgomery said when asked about Monday’s starter. “I don’t like to keep you guys in the dark. Do any of you play Wordle? You do? Okay — the starting goalie tonight has two vowels in his first and last name.”. Advertisement:. Well, that rules out a surprise return for Tuukka Rask.. Of course, Montgomery’s clue didn’t divulge anything, considering both Swayman and Ullmark have two vowels in both their first and last names. Although, if Montgomery is rolling with the “sometimes Y” rule, perhaps Swayman will get the nod against Toronto once again.. “No. I actually don’t know what vowels those even are,” Jake DeBrusk said when asked if he’d be able to solve Montgomery’s Wordle prompt.. The Bruins have a good problem on their hands when it comes to sticking with the hot hand in Swayman or keeping the goalie rotation in place by turning to Ullmark.. Swayman played a key role in Boston’s 5-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday, stopping 35 of 36 shots. The 25-year-old netminder is 5-0-0 in his last five games against Toronto, sporting a .963 save percentage.. Granted, Ullmark posted stronger numbers down the final stretch of the regular season — winning six of his last nine games after the trade deadline to go along with a .935 save percentage.. “We’ve leaned on it all year,” DeBrusk said of Boston’s goalie rotation. “I think since last season as well with those two guys. I think it’s one of those things where we’re confident in both guys. I think both guys have stolen lots of games for us this year.. Advertisement:. “I think it’s intimidating as another team, you know you got two starting goaltenders. For us, it’s just one of those things where we want to play well in front of either of them.”. With Montgomery not showing his hand once again, Bruins fans will need to wait until warmups to figure out whether it’ll be Swayman or Ullmark between the pipes on Monday night.. “I don’t know why we would divulge information,” Montgomery said. “Like if you’re preparing a game, there’s parts of the goaltender that are part of your pre-scout. So that’s an advantage for us, right? … I don’t tell my wife, I’m not telling you.”. Sign up for Bruins updates🏒. Get breaking news and analysis delivered to your inbox during hockey season..
